PDF/A-4

PDF/A is the ISO standard for the long-term preservation of electronic documents.
Many industries use the PDF/A format for their archival needs, such as public administrations, healthcare, and the financial and legal domains.
An ISO standard since 2005, PDF/A is a safe and reliable way to ensure that electronic documents can be viewed and reproduced the same way in the future, no matter which software is used.

The PDF/A-4 specification was released in 2020, and this version includes several benefits brought by PDF 2.0 (ISO 32000-2:2020), the PDF version on which PDF/A-4 is based.
Major improvements include support for modern and current-generation technologies such as Unicode.

PDF/A-4 comes in three versions:

  • PDF/A-4: replaces the previous b and u conformance levels (with PDF/UA ISO 14289-1:2014 taking over accessibility features).
  • PDF/A-4f: allows embedding files in any other format.
  • PDF/A-4e: for engineering documents and acting as a successor to the PDF/E-1 standard. PDF/A-4e supports Rich Media and 3D Annotations as well as embedded files.
